Selecting movies to play at the Regent … it is the hardest part of the job. There are countless hours spent watching trailers, reading critic reviews, researching box office predictions and results, pestering Regent staff for their input, asking my mom what she wants to watch (thanks, Mom!)… It seems never ending.
Sometimes the difficulty is in picking just one title to show when there are so many amazing choices. Other times it is sifting through movies to find anything that will work with the schedule. Opening a new movie usually means showing it for two or three weeks, and you have to wait just as long to get something for one week. And none of that takes into account the logistics of actually securing rights for the movie, and ensuring the booking rates are reasonable for such a small theatre. On that side of things, I have to thank the wonderful staff (especially Steve) at our booking company for all of their suggestions and hard work. I try to get movies booked in advance so they can be advertised, but it seems all too often that confirmation waits until the eleventh hour.
I have a quirky taste in movies myself, and selecting a movie to play for hundreds of people a week – it is strange how stressful it can be! I spend a lot of time trying to make the right choice. And more often than not, I never get a chance to watch it on our screen! I do love to hear when people enjoy a movie experience at the Regent, I means I “chose wisely.” And please, don’t ever be afraid to ask if we are getting a title in the future – the more people ask, the more I know there is an interest – and I’ll take all the help I can get! -Devyn
