FREE BLOCKBUSTER

A Blockbuster With No Late Fees? Allegan is Making it Happen

Physical media lovers can unite over the “Take a Movie, Leave a Movie” concept of Free Blockbuster, located Downtown Allegan inside the historic Regent Theatre.

Film-lovers in West Michigan can now “make it one of those nights” by experiencing a blast from the past with the new Free Blockbuster debuting in Downtown Allegan. Housed in the historic Regent Theatre, the concept is simple – take a movie, leave a movie.

This piece of nostalgia is part of a larger movement, with Free Blockbusters popping up throughout the United States. “I am a huge proponent of physical media and once I saw this concept online, I knew we needed one in West Michigan,” says Chad Campbell, local filmmaker and Kalamazoo Film Society board member. “Most of my favorite films were discovered while wandering the aisles of the video store. With streaming costs rising and services removing titles, this allows you to discover something you may never get the chance to see otherwise. Combined with being inside a beautiful historic theater, it doesn’t get much better than that.”

Free Blockbuster will make its debut on October 14th along with a special screening of the modern cult horror film “V/H/S,” as part of the Regent’s Shocktober! film series that takes place every Saturday night in October at 9:30pm for just $5 a ticket. The movie is sponsored by Tardy’s Underground Comics & Collectibles, the Allegan location of the Grand Rapids-based staple since 1979, Tardy’s Collector’s Corner.

The box will be located inside the lobby and will be available whenever the movie theater is open. Don’t forget to take home some popcorn and candy!
